Has anyone gotten their confirmation of entries yet? I have not. I always get nervous that I did something wrong.

This my first year coaching a middle school team. I wasn’t aware that a eligibility letter was going to be required. The team’s previous coach told me that last year she brought the letter to turn in at the meet. Would this be okay? My entries are ready to turn in, but I’m not sure how to go about the letter at this time. (Nor was I able to find the format for it) Is it okay if I bring my letter of eligibility to the meet?

My daughter is a diver and a swimmer. She has achieved the qualifying standard for diving and multiple swimming events. She would like to dive, understanding that it counts as one of her two individual events. My question is this: if she enters diving but it is determined that she is not among the top 18 that get to compete, can she then be entered into a second swimming event? It seems an unnecessary risk to take to potentially miss out on a second event, and one that I’m sure has come up before. Please advise the proper steps we should take. Thank you so much!

I would consult with your coach first and have him/her make the decision

Thank you for the quick reply, but that doesn’t answer what I need to know. I have looked at previous year’s entries and results and have a reasonable idea how she falls in the diving – so I know that to enter her is a risk because I have no idea how many other divers will be entered, or how they were judged (that whole subjective scoring is tough on a swim dad). So my remaining question is: is there a policy that allows a diver who has not made the top 18 cut, to then enter into a swimming event as an alternate second individual event? This is not a matter of trying to get the best seeding possible by over-entering and then studying the psych sheets. This is a matter of trying to participate in an individual event that she is qualified for, but offers no guarantee of participation. I assume that the system doesn’t allow for a third individual entry when one is diving, so I am looking for the human side of the system. There should be a work-around to handle this situation that likely has occurred before. Thanks again for your help!

Most coaches make lineup decisions and send in entries. I would consult with your coach and have him/her contact the meet manager with questions.

When is the last date to swim a qualifying time for the Middle School State Meet?

You can use times right up to the day entries are due.

Is the Misca middle school meet part of the limitation of two outside meets? Meaning if my son swims in a USA meet tomorrow will he be disqualified during/for MISCA state meet? He had already swam 2 USA meets during the season.

    1. David Zulkiewski

If the meet is on your schedule then the 2 outside USA Swim meets applies to it. Contact yoir coach so he/she can help you.

      1. Joni Boling

The Middle school coach says he should not but the Rec. league coach thought it was like a bonus meet so doesn’t apply to the 2 outside meet rule. It’s really unclear in the rule if the MISCA meet is part of that time period. It states “during the middle school season.” So I’m assuming the MISCA meet applies to the middle school season?

I noticed that in the meet info and qualifying times there are cut off times. Are those the updated state qualifying times for the 2017 state meet held in January?

Wow…the times were really whacked down this year. This is disappointing for me to see. Middle school is a year to really hook the kids into the sport so they get that passion and confidence to proceed to High school and beyond. All these times are faster than JO cuts. This seems more like a USA meet and not a school meet. Out of our team of 43 swimmers. Only 1 has one MISCA cut.

When does the ‘season start’ for middle school swimmers for 2016-2017? I have a swimmer who does not participate in the MISCA swim events (e.g. Derby Middle School – Birmingham). I read the High School rules but didn’t see anything for Middle school. Thanks!

The FAQ document seems to contradict the High School rules. (MISCA – Start of practice)

      VII. ELIGIBILITY RULES FOR ATHLETES
      H. LIMITED TEAM MEMBERSHIP
      2. …swimming & diving… shall apply the limited team membership rule from the point of a student’s first participation in a contest or scrimmage, rather than practice.

Middle school seasons vary by areas across the state. Tom Warnica is your head coach and should have information for you about your season. The girls MS season for Birmingham is usually November-January and the boys season is January-March.

Boo to this rule! Doesn’t allow for kids who go to a private school to compete. They should be allowed to swim for the middle school in the district in which they live.

What determines the school that an athlete would swim for?
A student must be enrolled in at least 50% of his/her current classes in the school for which he or she competes.

I have reached out to the MHSAA about this and will have some feedback for you soon

    2. dzulkiewski (Post author)

What rule are you referring to?
Private schools can compete in the MISCA MS Meet as long as they have a team. If your school does not have a team and their is interest in starting one, I would suggest you contact your school administration. The MHSAA does not allow athletes to attend one school and compete for another.
What determines the school that an athlete would swim for? The school that you are enrolled in.
The 50% rule is in regards to home schools and similar situations.

Every school, public or private, has its advantages and disadvantages, the lack of a swim team seems to be a disadvantage for your student athlete, but that can change. If you are a coach I would ask that you contact your MISCA Zone VP to discuss this further. If you are a parent I would suggest you reach out to your administration about starting a team. Please contact us with any additional comments or questions on the matter.

The event file can only be opened up with Hy-tek’s Team Manager and the file is for coaches to finish entries. There is another link called “Meet Information Sheet” that should have the Information about the Meet that you are looking for. If you have additional questions you can email the Meet Manager who’s email can be found under the “Meet Information Sheet”
